What is exciting about my job?
People often tell me I'm loca because Mondays are my favorite days, but it's all about my passion for the work I do. I'm fortunate to be part of an incredible team—work with mis Carnalas—and to be under a leader I deeply respect. My Jefe challenges me while consistently supporting my growth, both personally and professionally.
At my core, I'm an advocate and activist. In my role, I’m able to blend mi pasión for social justice with my experience as a community organizer, working directly with mi comunidad to create lasting, meaningful change. I have the opportunity to design programs, policies, and procedures that are equitable, accessible, and culturally responsive—ensuring we serve everyone in a way that reflects their needs and experiences. What truly drives me, though, is the chance to provide direct services. It keeps me grounded and reminds me every day why we do this work: to make a tangible difference in the lives de mi comunidad.
Words from a consejero/a
I’ve been fortunate to have had many mentors along my journey, each offering valuable lessons. In my professional life, I live by one guiding principle before offering support: I always ask myself, "Can I do this for everyone I serve?" This was advice I once received from a consejero. They told me that if the answer is yes, then I should proceed. If it’s no, then my responsibility is to find someone else who can better serve that individual’s needs.
They also taught me that people are like seasons. Van y vienen into your life to help you grow, fulfill a particular need, and then move on. The key is to learn from them, grow through the experience, and absorb everything they offer. When they leave, you continue moving forward, carrying their wisdom with you.
Advice you would give a new school leader?
Take care of yourself and love Mondays! If you’re not excited for the start of the week, it may be a sign that your season has passed. As a leader, your energy sets the tone, and if you’re not feeling energized, it’s hard to inspire those around you. Make sure you’re staying connected to what excites you, and don’t forget to prioritize your well-being.
If you catch me outside the office, you'll find...
Me spending time with my familia. Whether we're watching the marching band, performing with our folklórico group, or just chilling at home enjoying some cafecito, and watching movies eating papitas, con Tapatio, y limón.
How does CO-ALAS add value?
This question brings out so many emotions for me. Representation truly matters, and I am deeply honored to stand alongside so many amazing, talented, and educated Latinos and Latinas. Being part of CO-ALAS is empowering—it's a reminder of the strength, resilience, and potential within ourselves y nuestra comunidad.
