The Mountain Valley School District RE-1, Board of Education, is seeking an experienced educational leader to serve as Superintendent.  The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2023.

Location: 150 miles southwest of Colorado Springs; 150 miles west of Pueblo

The Qualifications

In order to be considered for the position, candidates must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for the superintendency.  Preference will be given to candidates with small school leadership experience and willing to live in the district.

The Board of Education is seeking a candidate with the following specific characteristics:

  • Strong, compassionate leader.
  • Proven success leading academic improvement efforts.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • A collaborative leader who values the rural lifestyle.
  • Experience with school finance and grant oversight.
  • A people person who is comfortable working with both veteran and novice staff.

Salary Range:  $100,000 - $115,000, 4-day week, 208-day contract

A leader with computer literacy skills that will support the latest work in education. A leader who works to build a systemic/systematic process for learning starting with the school board.
  • Passionate:  A leader who puts kids first. A person who has the skills and ability to motivate staff and students to take our charter school to the next level. A person who understands and treasures our Latino charter school foundation and community. This person must have a good understanding of our students, their successes, and the challenges they face. 
  • Leader: A person of strong moral character who is trustworthy, has integrity and is ethical. A leader with a proven track record. A person who can build consensus and take the heat. A leader with a strong work ethic and willing to do the work of others. A leader willing to stay for the long term.
  • Manager: A business minded educator with successful documented experience in public and charter school finance and operations. A person who knows how to manage a charter school focused on improvement.

Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000

The Qualifications

The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The Board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The Board developed the following desired characteristics.

  • Education level: MA in education or a related field.  A Principal License or Administrator License is preferred with educator evaluation endorsement required by October 1, 2023. 
  • Knowledge of community: Must have a good understanding of underserved populations and a high regard for small rural agricultural communities.
  • Knowledge of Expeditionary Learning* (EL): Experience with EL is preferred but, nevertheless, must have a good understanding of EL. Must be focused on student achievement while meeting the needs of all students.  Must have the ability to create a common vision, establish goals and follow through with results.
  • Passionate Leader: Must be a leader with a history of consistently demonstrating integrity, strong leadership, high expectations, and ethical treatment of others.  Must be a person who is self-motivated, open, and collaborative.  A leader willing to stay for the long term.  
  • Communicator:  Must have strong communication skills to all stakeholders.  A leader with strong understandable communication skills who listens to both the school and greater community.  A leader who maintains high visibility in the schools and greater community.   A person who speaks and writes with clarity.  A person who is comfortable with technology and understands its use in the schools.
  • Manager:  Must be a leader with successful fiscal management skills including school finance, budgeting and equitable allocation of funds and creativity in seeking additional forms of revenue.  A person who knows how to manage a system focused on improvement.  One who has the ability to work effectively with the school board.  Knowledge of Colorado school finance, law, and operations is preferred.

* The definition of the Expeditionary Learning (EL) philosophy is 'Learning by Doing' and it places a strong focus on student personal responsibility.

Salary Range:  $95,000

  • Visionary – An innovative, proactive leader with a clear vision for success.  A strategic thinker who develops plans and builds an environment for success. A leader who understands and support the social and emotional challenges that students face in today climate Understand the mental health challenges of students and staff.  A person who can plan ahead for the future needs the school district.  Person who understands and rural life, its strengths and its issues.  Plan to recruit and retain staff in a rural school district.
  • Educator – A Colorado certified school leader who has previous site-leadership experience. A collaborative team leader who involves all parties impacted by a decision. Places high priority on academic achievement and success of all students. Humble and compassionate educator sensitive the needs of school staff, students, and parents.  An educator who is willing to pitch in and is required to engage in all aspects of the needs of the district.

Salary: $90,000-$120,000 based upon experience, with a negotiated benefit package that includes family health, dental and vision, and single life insurance
